This is the way things always should have been.
Last time I submitted a moderator application I never heard back, never an email or PM thanking me for applying or something to the effect of "sorry, you are not what we are looking for at this time". I'd be interested in applying again, but if no one will take the courtesy to respond I'm not sure if its worth my time to do so.
