A decent data center would have enough redundancy built in that a storm would not cause that kind of downtime.
    I agree 100%.

My guess is that DNForum's data center didn't have a properly functioning UPS and/or the data lines coming in were not truly redundent.

Do some research on Rackspace, Verio, Pair, etc ... on a related topic, stick with hosts with data centers in California, Virginia, or best Texas.

    Pair!

IMO, we need more downtime, I was quite productive for the last day!

California? Make sure they are quake-safe. Seriously though, MANY reliable DCs ARE fire/flood/quake-safe.

    Re: Site outage explained!

Geography / weather is only part of the picture - one also has to look at infrastructure ... there is a heck of lot of fiber, etc in California.

In regards to the companies I mentioned, I'm referring to their *dedicated / colo* services.

Shared Hosting often, though there are exceptions such as Verio's business VPS ($149+/mo), tend to have much lower service levels, and thus tend to be down much more, and for much longer periods of time.

I'd assume DNForum is on a dedicated/colo box ... and thus my comments. If they're on a shared server, then actually about a day of downtime every few months is about par for the course for many webhosts :(

I would assume Miami is a terrible place to have a NOC center due to tropical storms.
One day you could lose it all.

I suggest a safe place that has good weather, no earthquakes, or tornados.

Thanks to all the members that "got our back" on other forum threads while we were down, and again, sorry this happened. No one would have expected InterLand to keep a server down for a day and a half. I see Adam has mentioned the idea of a mirror server. cool

    Re: Site outage explained!

While international (off the NA continent) may sound viable, the speed and cost of the links may be above what is reasonable. servers placed in the midst of the major traffic aenas sppell out the best results. A mirrior site though sounds like the best alternative - as long as it is on a different leg of all that is going on.

Growing pains surely have pain associated ...LOL

Hmmm - now that i notice my mispells - I also notice there is no edit key - why is that?

???? Strange - my post was adhered to my last post?

4th post - looks like there is some work that needs to be done with the site - strange that each post becomes part of my last post.

Oh well - end of subject - I guess we need to see if they fix things

Or it could be the anti-bump feature - useful for stopping the habitual thread-bumpers.

This actually BY DESIGN ... to avoid people talking to themselves. It takes two to tango, right? So You probably canNOT discuss with yourself.

I was referring to that earthquake that is suppose to put the coast of Cali, Oregon, Washington and BC underwater.
