For example - if the subject is "Japan." How much higher would a website with the name "Japan in the domain name be than one without "Japan?"
I know the domain name is just one piece of their equation but how important is that piece? Any feedback?

Every little bit helps,
....but if you don't do the work (or hire some one) to get it properly SEO and have good content along with quality inbound links, then it doesn't help much at all.
