I upload the file named what G told me to name it with this code:
(Simple HTML file) and I can click on the link to see this page get pulled with each domain but most of them won't verify. Does this take time (should I try again tomorrow?).Code:<html><body> test </body></html>

I have had problems getting them to verify using the upload method. Have you tried using the meta tag verification method? I have had good results using that.

Most of my older sites are verified, though, and I'm using the same file.

Re the 404 issue that is correct in that a 404 error must return a 404 status and can not return a 200 code. You need to setup your htaccess and make a 404 htm page file to correct that problem.
I use file upload. name as suggested by Google. Inside the file the same as the name.
