Search engine formulas have next to nothing to do with the domain name. They matter because most people default to using a domain name for the anchor text.

When you go out poking around for links, and when people link to your website naturally, do you know what most people use for the anchor when they link you?

Hey check out playball.us! They got this daily updates on blah blah...
That's it, it's that simple. Most people will use your domain name as anchor text in links to your website. In my experience, even when you specifically ask for a link text people will often forget/ignore you and use your domain anyways.

So yeah it does matter, but not because search engines rely on it.

Keyword within domain name is important from my experience.
Go to google and do search with following keywords.
    mind orgasm

    #2 shows mindorgasm.com

Click on the link and see html source.
I am practically ignoring lots of SEO just to test importance
of the keyword in the domain name.

    No Meta tags.
Did not even closed <head> with </head>
    Almost no content
    PR Zero
    No back link, I think.

How mindorgasm.com got on #2 if it's not for keywords within domain name?

-age (archive.org shows 2001, so at least 7 years)

-you have 0 competition, nobody is trying for mind orgasm
("mind orgasm" 6000 results, mind orgasm w/o quotes 239,000)
observing the non-quote results you notice "mind" and "orgasm" are not used in the sequence "mind orgasm" in most instances. that makes a considerable difference

-you have a link from some article about how much domain name matters with Mindorgasm.com as the anchor link, which is ironic as you just proved my earlier point about anchor text. contains "mindorgasm", in proper sequence

-first two words in the title of your homepage are Mind Orgasm, and the keywords repeat with MindOrgasm.com at the end of the title.

I have been doing SEO since 1995 and speak at a few shows.

The lowdown is this, if your domain "contains" a keyword and has content relevant to that keyword then you are golden as far as having a great chance to rank. If your link structure of your site is well done then you have a excellent chance.

I shake my head alot reading these forums where people do not see value in single, double word domains that have excellent keywords in them, simply because it is not a .com.

Heh, I buy domains for keywords and age the heck out of them as well as develop sites on them.

...and TechPad brings up an essential point in this matter. If the keyword(s) in the domain name belong to an aged domain, in my experience the combination of keywords+age of domain = higher ranking. Furthermore, if you are geo-targeted with a ccTLD domain name, then you will do well with that country-specific Google search.

    Examples: JobSearch.ca Ninjutsu.ca FreeKamaSutra.com

The age of the domain has no DIRECT relation to search engine rankings.
Google does not look at a domain, see it has been registered for 10 years, and give it a little bonus. The fact is, older domains that weren't used for garbage tend to have a few more links (accidental and real), and an indexed HISTORY with Google.

significance of redchairs vs red chairs

Anyone have some data or estimates on the percentage of searches done by the public with and without spaces? For example, redchairs or red chairs, another example is discountstockbroker or discount stock broker

This subject is rarely discussed but an important issue which is usually overlooked when doing seo work and and something I have always wondered about. It's also seems likely to be relevant and important as far as use in the title, meta tags and content are concerned, in addition to the domain/url.

It picks it up as one word, and it matches your domain. If you have great content, fresh, lots of links, etc that is better for your search results, but if you are doing basic pages and minimum development, the domain can add a lot to the search results.

It's a good thread. A question bothering me: do I stand a chance of topping google search results with a domain AB.com (A and B are keywords) if the majority of the searches are for A B C, where C is another keyword?
