I actually own my own .edu domain name..I'm one of the very few that still have a personal .edu, but I think it's really just for show rather than anything else. Unless I wanted to start a university..it is probably not worth much..
As for the backlinks..and doing SEO related stuff..I would stay away from that...might get in over your head with school administration...I did something silly back in university and got my account banned for year..( I crashed part of the school network...lol)..yeah, I can laugh about it now..10 years ago..
Well may you can start something like wordcloud or linkcloud with some articles as it wont look Link Farm

I also have my own edu domain which is not related to any university! my own edu domain it cant get any better folksplanning to start a good ol blog on it and maybe monetising by getting paid links
