In this case, not only numbers count. You must be sure to backlink only to the site that related to yours. Simply adding a back link from "diet" page to your "dog training" page will only get your visitor confused. Sooner, when PR algorithm improves, your site will be penalised as well.

I agree. This is one of item that you need to keep in mind. Quality link as well.

I only agree partly on this statement.

To prove this, I will use my blog as an example.

Although it is new (less than a week old) and without any page rank, I managed to get it rank at the first page of google search out of 5 million search for the term "malaysia domain name".

If you try searching "marketing tips", "dog training", "wedding favours" and some other hot keywords and you will probably see the site contains these keywords in their domain name sitting at the first page of the google search results.

This is why you will need a hot keyword as your domain name.
It will save a lot of your time and effort later on SEO.

Backlinks will increase your PR (the reliability and reputation) and push you a little bit higher to the top. But a high PR will not always guarantee you get into the first page of google search.
