Page rank - what does the difference mean?

Hi

Please can someone enlighten me on page rank ?

One of my names is PR4 when you check http://thename.com but only PR1 if you check http://www.thename.com (thename.com is only for example)

Why the difference and what criteria does google use ?

I believe it is because PR by itself is calculating "page" rank. Therefore, www. is treated as a subdomain page and it is different compared to your domain page.
Correct me if I understand it wrongly.

Hi Jas,
What you have to remember is that pagerank is basically a measure of backlinks, nothing more. If several sites are linking to "http://thename.com", but only one or two link to "http://www.thename.com", then it stands to reason that the former has a higher pagerank. Google doesn't care whether they both point to the same page, or whether they even exist, just how many pages link to that address. Hope that clears it up for you!
