I currently have my main site with a splash page, advertising through word of mouth. I'd like to have a higher PR and I'm wondering if this helps or doesn't do anything at all:
We'll say I own dnforum.com
What I'm doing is, setting up extension "/example" and I'm going to make these public. If I hypothetically have "dnforum.com/example/firstexample"; "dnforum.com/example/secondexample"... and so on, does this help dnforum.com - in any way with search engines?

No. I have a lot of articles to archive that I'm publicly sharing. So instead of say...
"dnforum.com/forums"
It'll probably be
"dnforum.com/archive"
Blah blah "dnforum.com/archive/examplehere"...
So that leads to my question of, does this help my main site's page ranking? (example: dnforum.com)

I remember reading something about this with technorati links. If you are using that service, you might want to check out support.technorati.com to see if there are any posts about this.
If I'm not mistaken, technorati links can also help your PR.
The best way to get ranked is using a SILO structure and LSI concept. Its a deep concept that Google loves and can easily get your site to rank for whatever keyword you use. I cannot discuss it here but I can share a website in which has given me the structure to design any website the right way.
Pagerank is a funny old thing. High pagerank brings the benefit of a high frequency of crawling, but if the external links aren't of high quality and relevancy, it won't bring any kind of magic rankings on it's own. Yes. What we are talking about here is called Semantic structuring. Semantics are absolutely vital to illustrating the relevance between categories, topics, and pages. They ofcourse influence your internal link schema at the same time.
This needs to be done "tastefully", as I always say. Logic is the key here. Hierarchical structuring can be well explained by the theory of taxonomy.

Liquiteq has everything covered but I will put in an easy way to understand.
If these internal pages are linking to your main page "dnforum.com" then it would get a pagerank.
Flash isn't very friendly to SE's. If you want to raise your pagerank it comes down to 1 thing, inlinks. Get people to link to your site and your pagerank will go up.
