    simple:
    - use ONLY images that you own the copyright for(or you bought and have the proof) -or public domain pictures, if you find good ones.
    - replace the images in question- the complaint might be (or not) legit, but you need to stay on the safe side

    What's not copyrighted?
    Most everything is.
The only thing you can copy are images that are in the 'public domain', which is ovr 50 or 70 years - or images owned by some public institutions.
Search for "public domain images" to find out.
Just because there is no copyright notice, it can still be copyrighted.

If you own the copyright and you have proof, then you should be fine.
But, if you don't have the copyright for it or you have not bought it from a royalty-free source stockphotos, then it is safe to change the image.
It is important to use only legally-acquired images or you will run into trouble.

    We wish you well.

if someone has granted you permission to use an image of theirs, can they later revoke that permission?

at the suggestion of another dnfer i began to scout for images on free hosts like flickr and photobucket, then contact the owner through the site, and simply ask "hi, i am building a website and would like to use this picture of yours ... blah blah blah."

basically, it works .. but if they later demand the pic be removed, or worse, demand they are owed some sort of compensation post-facto ... do they have 'rights'?

is their prior consent like a verbally binding agreement? ... i'd like to think so .. and so would my bird ...

Do you have a written record of an email perhaps granting you permission? And is the grant of permission for a certain period only?

I don't think they would demand something out of it if you have the proper permission.

Hello. You don't copyright an image that you bought from stockphotos. When you buy the images assuming they are royalty-free, you get to use them. In other words, you have a license to use them. But, with regards to copyright, you don't own them. The stockphoto company/original owner still owns the copyright.

When you see somebody using the image that you bought, it is possible that they also bought that same image from your source. If that is the case, you cannot contest it. If you have proof that the image is stolen, you can always report it directly to the source and let them take action.

That is the reason why it is always wise to have your image custom-made by a design company. That way, you have exclusive right to use the image.

    We wish you well.
