I'd rather other people try it out before I upgrade everything. I've already seen someone use it and played with it myself. I got aggravated because everything is different.

Yes - after 20 minutes after logon HD still rattles because the system is still starting up
Everything good is screwed (i.e. search in file)
Lot of software does not work there properly

    Don't buy Vista!

Vista is supposed to compete with the Apple OS X Tiger but you know Microsoft. It only looks like OS X Tiger but it is:
    - very unstable
    - has lots of compatibility issues
-unbelievably slow (at least 2x slower than XP) not to mention OS X

I've done a lot of research lately because my sister just bought a brand new PC (Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor 7300, spent close to $4k) and low and behold Windows Vista Ultimate Edition simply refused to install lots of programs i.e. graphics drivers, Firefox, printer drivers. Every time you tried to launch an application an error message popped up saying that windows will attempt to fix the problem but it always failed.
Unable to do anything on the brand new computer we decided to call the Microsoft customer support. Their answer was shocking: "They are aware of these issues yet they don't have a fix." Then they asked if we had a copy of Windows XP and told us to format the computer and use Windows XP x64 instead. Unbelievable. They offered to issue a refund without hesitation.
It seems that Windows Vista doesn't work well or at all on a top of the line PC.

Needless to say the next computer I'm buying is going to be a mac with their mind-blowing new operating system Leopard.

Hopefully Vista has improved a bit by now. When I first buy my laptop months ago, I installed 2003 server immediately. Cannot stand Vista since it has so much problem. I still have dual boot, maybe I can run some Windows update and see if it is better.

I've been using Vista for a few months with no problems. Just turn all the fancy crap off, switch to classic menus and it's not that different from XP in classic mode. User Access Control can drive you a bit nuts though, but you can turn it off in the registry.

I've had a few minor compatibility issues - had to upgrade Macromedia Suite to CS3 because Fireworks kicks the display into basic mode. That's not a problem really, it's just an annoyance. WinAVI does the same thing, but there's no upgrade available yet. The remote control software for my Canon camera doesn't work (I do some stop-animation stuff), but I use my laptop with XP for that. That's about it.

I'll keep my XP for now.

What really sucks is Office 2007. The whole new look and nothing seems to work the same. Autoformat in Word is the worst.

I wish there was an option for the "Classic" look instead of the new, reorganized toolbars.

In my local laptop store , Almost identical PC's ... old spec ( XP ) v new spec ( Vista ) , all Vista PC's are discounted , XP are not ( on higher end machines ) ..
reason : " anyone who uses a PC alot , does not want Vista , thus the old spec ( XP ) machines are in demand .... thus no discount ..." ... I also wanted XP ... and paid more for older spec ?

MicroSoft has consented to continue with XP as OEM in new computers through at least next March.

But good luck finding a new PC or Laptop off the shelf with XP.

It is not difficult to get used to Vista when you turn all the crap off and disable all the popups.

Some one did mention the new Office 2007. Now that is a bizarre and un-needed overhaul on the Word side of it. Sure it looks clean and pretty, but I can't find a damn thing.

Linux anyone? Got SuSe, Red Hat, and Linspire waiting to install. I understand Linspire is good to wean onto Linux.

Did not try Word 2007 yet but Excel 2007 has TOO much feature and very confusing.
It is not user friendly and it looks like the features are for CPAs and not regular users.

My colleague has downgraded his latop from vista to xp... he couldn't work otherwise. Too many restrictions, instability, and it's not security in the Unix sense, just plain inconvenience.
Every version gets worse, and m$ like to pack the stuff with drm, spyware and countless "protections" that work against the consumer. m$ is evil, I miss real computer science
