I think the aliens are inbreeding. Not a positive sign for us earthbound species. I think that is what they are really interested in...enrolling us homosapiens and homosapienesses into their breeding program.

I came across other similar paintings by well-known artists when studying art, and it's amazing how little remarked upon are the items in their background. It's as if it was assumed that they were part of the painter's imagination.
