    Archive.org question.

Can someone share their thoughts on archive.org? is this really helpful site/tool or is it also like Alexa ranking which can't be trusted?

For example, if a domain name was regd. in year 2000, but it's not having any records on archive.org, does that mean that there was no site built on that name for sure?

    Any response is appreciated.

    thanks,

    Re: Archive.org question.

I thought that one possibility was that the site may have prevented crawlers or archiving.

    Re: Archive.org question.

It does have a lot of data but it is not 100% It mostly has data on popular sites that have atleast standard search engine ranking sites with no visitors or no rank usually have no or partial data.

Presence of data in archive.org can tell you something about what was there. Absence of data in archive.org is inconclusive.

This means that it was not indexed by archive.org spider, even if there was a site -- for example, site's owner could deny indexing in robots.txt or somehow archive.org missed that site; imho, probability for this scenario for a well established site is less then 5%.
