Big mess with dynadot. One letter .ws domains.

When dynadot added the bulk register function to the site there was a glitch with the .ws domain names. All 1,2, and 3 character .ws domains were showing as available. There was an individual in Spain that happened to be looking up those domain names at the time and registered over 50 of them. When dynadot found the glitch they had to delete the domain names since the cost for them was:

    3 char: $500
    2 char: $1000
    1 char: $50000

They deleted the domain names and issued account credit to the customer.

There are Plenty of problems like this everyday really ...

Though most times it is over "Reserved" domains -

Should registrars have a better dbase in place to prevent these problems ? Yes .... But the "Registrants" could also read up on extensions and whats not allowed and reserved as well.

Re: Big mess with dynadot. One letter .ws domains.

I just recently was doing a search for the letters JJ on a GoDaddy name search. They came up as being available in .de, .be, .jp, and a couple of other ccTLD's.

Naturally, they were not actually available.

Is this the first time this has happened? I wish. Get's ya all excited thinking ya done did find something and then WHAM! SLAM! Door shut.

It is the responsibility of the registrars to provide correct information,
The person buying domain might not check some other site to check if a name is available.
These registrars somehow just get approval and add to their site for earning money before doing basic data setup.

By the way, I love the little "account credit" jab you got in. How ridiculous is that!

    Dynadot:

"...we deleted the domains, and issued the customer an account credit. We can also issue a full refund to the credit card if that is better."

    Ya think?

Thanks for this laugh first thing in the morning. Another registrar on my national DO NOT CALL list.

Re: Big mess with dynadot. One letter .ws domains.

The registry took away 158 of my domains back in 2000 ... all ending in a hyphen. It was a glitch in the new web interface at bulk register. Prior to that all domains were registered via e-mail templates.

The funniest thing about this is the $50,000 missing from the Dynadot bank account, even if it was only temporary. And I'm still wondering why they named their company Dynadot.
