A category-killer is a domain which best describes a specific industry.

For instance; computer industry category-killer would be computer.com or computers.com

Other examples; domain- or domains.com for the domain industry. drug- or drugs.com for the pharmaceutical industry.

Typically, these domains or .com but other tlds apply if the domain describes a product or service exactly. These domains are generic, but not too generic - i.e. idea.com or thing.com are generic, but not category-killers.

Yes. "Category killer is a term used in marketing and strategic management to describe a product, service, brand, or company that has such a distinct sustainable competitive advantage that competing firms find it almost impossible to operate profitably in that industry..."

None of these domains are strong enough to make competing names hopeless.

Your examples have been deleted but I can't imagine any dot pro name possessing a distinct sustainable competitive advantage over the same keyword dot com. Typical category killers would be newspaper classified ad category title dot coms, for example motorcycles dot com. Non dot com domain category killers are more likely to dominate because of a powerful original business model rather than a generic name, for example wikipedia dot org, the user generated encyclopedia.

If you had both singular and plural versions of the dot coms then you could safely declare yourself king of those product niches. Realistically, even if you owned an earth shattering dot com name like motorcycles dot com (you don't unless your last name is Honda), a great domain name alone is not enough to smash all competition. If it was, Yamaha, Harley etc would have closed shop.

I might call them "subcategory killers" ...

or else maybe "killers of very small categories"
