Does the 80/20 rule apply to domains?

You know the old 80/20 rule, that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts?

Does this apply to domaining for you?

I put in a lot of time managing domains, building webpages, affiliate marketing, etc., but find most of my revenue comes from domain sales that, from beginning to end, take only minutes of my actual time.

Almost certainly applies, if not more skewed for many if not most.

Most definitely. Though I viewed it slightly differently from you...

I applied the 80/20 to be 80% of your revenue comes from 20% of your names.

As an example, if you acquire 5 domain names, sell one to an end user for $200, and sell the rest on eBay for $12.50 each (just to keep the example simple), your total revenues are $250, but 80% of that ($200) is from the sale of one name.

I have found this to almost perfectly reflect how domaining has been for me... I've made a few $xxx end user sales, but probably 95% of my names are/were sitting there with no activity.

The ratio may vary depending on the quality of the names.

I think that rules applies almost everywhere in life. Heck I think even 80% of Frank Schilling's rev also
come from the 20% of the domains he owns... So does Kevin Ham's etc etc...
