I sent a payment to exody.com for the start of membership a couple of hours ago but have not received any login details.

How do you get your login details for the site once payment has been sent?

It could take as long as 24 hours (especially since this is Sunday). I know Dwayne is busy today because he answering interview questions for an upcoming story we are doing about Exody at Domain Name Journal. You will be well rewarded for your wait though. The Exody lists are a little bewildering in their remarkable depth and variety, but they are an indispensable tool.

Is it best just to look the through the name manually, or do people use scripts.etc. to find decent names?

For most of the lists, I used a simple domain name filter program (they are available free on the net), to sift out the names that have keywords that I am interested in.
