i bought the name breaktheseal.com a long time ago when i was planning to use it as a business name. I paid for it with a money order through the mail, and the transaction went smoothly.

I paid $150 for it.

I am reluctant to buy right now since you can still get killer names off the drops and domainers usually ask too much for my price range. Though i have made lots of offers.

i must have tried about 70-100 trades...

I once registered a name and sold it for 5 figures 4 days later.

I've bought several domains in the four figure range. Even bought one off GregR, but for only $500.

I think purchasing domains at $1,000-$6,000 (at least for me) can be a more profitable venture. Then patrolling deleted name lists for hours, searching for mediocre domains. You're better off buying a premium name, where the quality of the domain is not a toss up between each individual. But rather agreed upon by most, as a great domain.

I've made a pretty good extra buck with domains without purchasing (other than reg'ing) ... but I'm fairly convinced I could have done better if I had.

How often are any of you who purchase names finding decent ones? What would you say your purchase-to-sales ratio is?

I bought a DN that received modest type-ins and directed it to an unrelated site just for the extra traffic.
In a couple months the type-ins dried up.
