I've been here over a year or two. [edit]Wow, two years[/edit] Something like that. And you've posted almost as much as I have in the 4 months you've been here.
This is probably the first post I would agree enough to reply.
I agree.

My 401K is shrinking.. :(
Although, a co-worker of mine who is 69, watched his 401K go from half a million dollars 5-6 years ago to about 90K today (forced company stock).
The only part of my 401K doing well consistently is the option to invest in overseas oil companies. Gee, I wonder why?

downturns are a part of life... its just an opportunity to buy more of the good ones at cheap, like a firesale!
This has been the best year I've ever had domaining.... I do have a decent amount in otc stocks which has been paying very well for me![]()
Time to buy... Then again, US economy isn't expected to go on a rebound until after mid-year, so this might continue yet.
Then again, what goes down...

100% investment in domains?
The #1 rule in investments is diversification.
Also, you can make money with stock trading no matter what the direction of the stock market is.
The idea of investing is broad and you cannot expect each market to be isolated. Domains, real estate, stocks, FOREX, commodities, precious metals, art - all are interconnected. When one invests properly, they spread their investment among several different elements.
I listen to MAD MONEY
Domaining to the max.
Diversify, diversify, diversify. Good advice.
Even if just in domains, diversify your portfolio.
Keep up with the news is important. Don't look for a turnaround or upturn until 2009 or even later.
Bank of America pumps in $2 billion to bail out countrywide. That didn't work. So they spend $4 billion to buy them. Chasing bad money with good money.
Merrill Lynch just posts a lose of $9.9 Billion.
Deutsche Bank is getting ready to foreclose on a default of a $3 billion loan of a casino in Vegas.
Notice how the "m" has changed to "b" for billions.
Many, numerous, most of the capital and investment firms, banks, lenders have not fully disclosed their loses. This is just the cusp.
There will be a jolt like none before.
And I am not sure domain names will be totally immune from this. I would hate to have all my funds tied up in domain names and then try to be liquid real fast.
Cash on hand, real estate (land, not houses), and other tangible and intangibles are crucial.
I am always hopeful and optimistic but also a realist.
Frankly, we are already in a recession but few want to use the "R" word.
ain't that fun?
I know a girl who did this and retired at 42 years old. Now she is back to work as her 16 year old son was accepted to Yale.
Good for him, sucks for her. Talk about a drain (about $70K per year) but a great investment in him.
its good for me as the Indian stock market is climbing like nothing (even though it lost a lot in the past few days...time to pick up something cheap). I put in a little amount into stocks on my recent trip back to India, but now that I'm going back permanently, I would devote more time to stocks.
There's one thing you can't beat about stocks: liquidity. The only investment that can offer the same liquidity is a savings account. Real estate, domains, everything else can't get you cash in a hurry unless you sell short (list a LL.com for 50k and see how fast it gets snatched up. I would guess about 3.8 seconds).
So yes, for those without regular jobs and an aversion to savings account, stocks remain a very important option when it comes to liquidity.

I do some stock trading daily as I have a lot of free time on my hand. However, I have learned that I shouldn't be holding any stock overnight. In this kind of market, I only look at daily average high and low and day trade. Fundamental is not a word in my stock book anymore... It disappeared along with the burn marks I had before....
So far this year I am up 10% which isn't that bad. I am sure domaining will make more money, but I am still explorering in the market.
From what I've observed, its best to stay in long term, rather than make quick profits. A solid company with solid work ethics and brand value will ALWAYS bounce back.
A company like Coca Cola might lose some value over an year, but in ten years, it'll only increase in value, since the brand is so old, trusted and strong. I tend to look at brand strength, not current market value; a solid brand would eventually win against the market.

That's what I've been saying
As said above diversification is a must and investments should always be considered with a long-term outlook.
