The new Obama plan aims to promote the construction of high speed rail infrastructure during the next 6 years. The government will be investing (spending) $53 billion into the realization of this goal. I say it is about time, although it is estimated it would take about 25 years for those rails to experience some activity.
And of course there has to be opposition to such a plan:
"U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation Committee, compared the president's high-speed rail infrastructure plan to "giving Bernie Madoff another chance at handling your investment portfolio.''
After all, what could really be worse than having 80% of American cities and towns connected; less dependency on traditional oil driven motors and by default less reliance on fossil fuels, less inner-city congestion, manageable airport traffic, increased mobility at very minimal pollution...
I guess France, western Europe, Japan, S. Korea and China had their rails put in place because government couldn't be trusted to deliver. How does such a man become chairman of the House Transportation Committee?
Maglev FTW!
