What do you guys use or planning to buy? What's the most important thing that make you decide which laptop to buy - weight, battery life, screen size, wireless signal strength, warranty, manufacturer or something else?

It's really personal preference with laptops. Depends on the application. Some of my clients want smaller, lighter laptops for traveling, some want larger, with larger screens for usabity. I always encourage my customers to go to a store, touch & feel before making a final decision. I also warn them about things like battery life, upgradability, etc with a laptop. I consider laptops to be disposable, average life span 2-3 years.

My brand recommendations to my clients in order of ease to work on (from a service point of view, and I make it clear that's the point of view I'm giving them):

toshiba
dell

Edit: I personally use a sony pcg-tr3 - getting a little old, but small, sweet... might pull it out of my trunk once a month.

2 PCs - one Dell (because it was cheap) and one self made.

The self made one is used primarily for DRT scanning.

I just picked up a sony vaio a couple of weeks ago. I haven't heard much bad about their laptops aside from battery problems after a year or so.

Macbook pro - it quite simply rocks....you do need to download multiple web browsers though.

I don't know if they're available in your neck of the woods but Dell Outlet has some great values (my PC is a "scratch and dent" but I can't find a scratch or dent on it). Just:
- Have specific stats you're looking for in a reasonable price range and stick to it
- Be prepared to wait a long time and check the site often
- Be prepared to quickly buy, good deals go fast

Also, are you looking for a Mac or PC? The new Mac books are nice but anything Apple is notorious for poor battery life (a friend of mine has the new thin one and it doesn't last long, maybe 45-60 minutes at best).

PC laptops - DellOutlet for inexpensive but Sony Vaios are nice, but can get big (nice screens).

the worsest ever is dell- lifetime 2 months, burned without notification

normally they all gets f-ed here approx two months after the end of manufacturers warranty

Draggr yup this is the biggest problem there are no official outlets + we can only get the models thats are imported by some of the local dealers and the biggest imported dealers are like 1000km's away so i can only get selected few models , i am looking for PC , i don't like mac's because lack of applications and support and hard to use, i am looking for something under $1000 , this is the best Pakistani laptops site tell me if anything that catches your eye http://www.makarts.com/

Dell laptops get extremely hot, some more than others, l wouldn't own one for that reason alone.

I have a HP DV5000, It stays cool and gives me 7+ hours of battery life, Doesn't weigh much and the WiFi works great. I had it for a few years now and NO complaints, You just have to remove all the cheap software that comes with it.

I'm viewing this on my toshiba laptop and it's the second I've owned. No complaints here - other than it came bundled with that garbage known as vista.

Then you may want to follow Domain Newbie's advice, get something cheap (well, inexpensive) and upgrade every 12-18 months.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting an external 2.5" USB drive (get 2.5" (self powered), not 3.5" (needs AC power). They're coming down in price here (I've seen 250GB generic brands for $100US / Rs6700(assuming th 67:1 ratio you mentioned).

Simpletech is cheap / generic, Maxtor is OK for inexpensive but for me Seagate and Western Digital are the best ones (YMMV).

One - you have extra storage (storage on laptops is usually cut back)
Two - when you upgrade you can just plug the drive into the new laptop.

hmm good idea newbie and draggar but there is one problem i know i am going to upgrade but i don't want something that cant run some of my basic web design softwares with ease what do you think would be the best price range for a student orientated laptop ?

I've run Frontpage and Dreamweaver on some systems that are *much* lower than what is on the page you linked with no issues.

Even the Rs23,000 system on that page is much higher end.

I've been using an Asus U1F ultraportable for the last year. I only use it when I'm traveling, so I wanted a light and portable one. I prefer using my desktop computer for work/domaining.

I have used almost every brand of laptop but I like my current Sony Vaio the most... I have the SZ model which is fast and light. Perfect for traveling and going on site.

I had problems with Toshiba Tablet (last laptop) until I dump the default OS and reinstall Windows server which lost most of the Tablet functions. And the previous laptop was the Dell D80 (I think) and it weights like a brick and can really burn your lap when you are using it for too long.

Regardless which laptop you select, I definitely suggest carbon fiber casing (Sony) for a little more money. The benefit is definitely lighter. The most important reason is that my 18 months old VIAO still look like new. You should know how frustrate to see the color deterioration where the hot spot (hot drives) area look like on the wrist area after just couple months of usage on your brand new laptop??? This never happen on my VIAO which I have it turn on at least 20 hours a day.

Oh I forgot... I still can squeeze about 2 hours of usage time from my Sony battery as I don't plug it in when using it at home. My older Dell laptop lasts 4 hours but you cannot compare a brick to a ultra portable laptop.
