I've built up a fan site for a local morning show's game show (I won't get into details). This is probabaly the most popular morning radio show in south Florida (with a very large broadcast range).

They started talking about "fan sites" and the last one was my site!

This site also got the most conversation from the staff (one referred to me as "anal" since I am very detailed about each point of the game (if people paused, the staff's responses, little hints, etc..).

I won't be able to get a definite report until tomorrow but Adsense reported 46 impressions. Hopefully they'll plug it again tomorrow or I'll see another increase tonight for people checking when they get home from work.

I get home and what do I see? Hate mail from a fan site dedicated to the show (including insults, threats, and unfounded accusations). My phone has also been ringing since a little before 5 and I found out why, someone on that site posted all of my personal information.

I guess the day I heard about this fan site (when it was also mentioned on the radio) I was able to "cybersquat" their site, then imitate it, then hack the site.

(The fan site is about the show, my site is about the contest).

I guess it is time for some tense admin to admin discussions.

Make sure to send a copy of the hate mail to the radio station. Do it in a respectful way and they just may go about repeating your website again...

WhoIs on the domain.

Admin refuses to remove it even though (even though the spam increased after it was posted and the calls started after it was posted).

He doesn't condone it but he won't regulate the site.

He even had the nerve to welcome me to the site and hope I enjoyed my stay.

Eh, I'm done with that site.

I've also noticed someone keeps editing out my site in the Wikipedia article on this show but keeps that site in. Either both sites should be allowed or neither.

No but I was excited.

Out of all this there is some good news, I'm able to get "today's" numbers now (hosted in the UK who is in the future).

Before today the site was getting 10-15 hits a day on average.

Today - 184.

No revenue, though (ads are poorly placed on the site) but there were 10 search submissions.

If putting up with a few days worth of hate mail and voice mails is the price for this, then I'll pay it for all of my domains!

It was a quiet night (I'm sure most of them are asleep now). I'm willing to bet most of the people who sent me the mail will end up being regular visitors to the site (because I am very thorough). Gotta love the irony.

I've been keeping an eye on this site and I've had a couple of people join the forums, but not regular posters. Here's the traffic reports. The site was mentioned on June 6th (pretty obvious from the reports).

So, no huge long term increase in traffic but it has gone from about 10-15 a day to 25-40 a day. Revenue is still flat-lined, but I'm not too worried about that at this time.

Most (85%) of the visitors are from local ISPs (Comcast, Bellsouth (AT&T) etc..) but I've noticed a few international visotors, .dk (Denmark?), and .se (where is this one?). They must be listening to the show online.

A very slight increase with this.

Also, now with a Google search for +"Show name" +"Game name" I am #5 (out of 9 results) so the site has (finally) been indexed by Google.

#1 is a site that has been up for a while now (it will be hard to beat them) (+ 1 "duplicate)
#2 is Wikipedia - possible viral advertising, but I do not think so since they take a large section to talk about "the other site (#1 result)
#3 is a "broadcast" site where they play the show - This one has very recently popped up (very high chance of viral advertising)
#4 is this forum (where I posted a question about not being indexed, go figure)
#5 - my site (+1 duplicate)
#6 - My MySpace blog where I mentioned the site
#7 - A blog about the show (again, possible viral advertising)

Not too bad.
