i wasnt aware you could remove the license statement at all
on an site which says sponsored by amazon it just means they are using their affiliate program to sell books or whatever

well for vbulletin you have to pay a license fee once a year
some software sites work like this due them constantly upgrading the software

It depends on what you want. If you want a forum then you should know that there are free forums too that are fully customizable and with lots of features, for example phpBB.
Powered by means that you use the technology developed by [NameOfSoftware] . If you want to run email on your server then you should obviously look for other software, which may or may not be free.
