    Radio Shack Out of headphones

    For your enjoyment:

Want headphones? Don’t head for the Radio Shack. According to every search I performed this morning, absolutely no headphones are for sale. Even though they feature three sections with multiple categories inclusive for over the head and under the ear and behind the neck headphones and earbuds, a zero null results and a dead white screen is the result of every click.

    Now, that’s technology at work.

PS I called the 800 number to ask about product information, a man named Lynn listened to my problem and then said “Hmn. By Golly, I see what you mean”. Sometimes you don’t get the sharpest tool in the shed, but isn’t Radio Shack about …getting the sharpest tools in the shed?

Radio Shack I am sure will be dissolved before too long.

They are trying to remake themselves simply with the letter R and then they want to be known as The Shack and use Shaquille O'Neal as their Shaq promo.

When a company does not even know its own brand and identity, I look for their bankruptcy to be announced in the not so distant future.

I guess that's better than the dude named Peggy that answers the phone in the television commercials.

They have been for as long as I've known about them - and that's a long time.

True, I am surprised they have hung on as long as they have.

They used to sell cool radio circuit boards, speakers, and speaker enclosures in their prime (which was when they first opened). They have failed to keep up with trends until that trends is deeply etched in other chain stores. By the time The Shack adopts a new program or trend its been out for a while. They always seem to play catch-up to the competitors. There is one not too far from my house and they always appear empty and the store is poorly stocked. Plus, being near a Wal-Mart does not help because anything the Shack has Wal-Mart will have cheaper.

Overall, I think their strategy is and has been failing. Yes, get near a Wal-Mart because Wal-Mart will have a ton of traffic and you may catch some of that. But the reality is people go into Wal-Mart first and to The Shack as an afterthought and after the potential consumer has already made their purchases. Wal-Mart is going upscale with brand name consumer electronics (and some high end products) and accessories and certainly is crushing The Shack's business and product line.

People have been underestimating and calling an end to this company for years, but it never happens, and likely never will. RS is an extremely efficient company - do some research on the finance sites and look at the cash flow, earnings, etc. - this place is well run. I have had the same kind of initial reaction looking in the store and seeing what appears to be them chasing dead markets, but the numbers reveal a method to that madness.

Add to that a revival in the DIY geek sector and more people fixing electronics in a bad economy, and there may be even brighter days ahead. For a company this large, RS is nimble and expands/contracts to meet market demand. They are currently pushing a large expansion. The small footprint stores, franchise stores, low overhead and tight supply chain with limited SKU's keep these guys in the ballgame.

    DIY electronics
    Batteries
    Cell phone contracts
    Seasonal Xmas best sellers

These are all areas they compete well in.
