    Very disturbing news...

    Humans die to protect sharks

(that are already caught in nets and usually clubbed to death by the fishing crews.)

If you will notice, this article specifically mentions commercial fishing. To my knowledge, there are no fishing craft that go out to catch sharks and only sharks.

There are literally thousands of sharks that either die while ensnared in nets or are clubbed to death (or shot) by the fishing crews and thrown overboard.

Now there is a benefit the sharks can provide and people want to ***** about it????

Seems to me shark skins, shark teeth, and other shark products have been en vogue for years.

Seriously, there has been a slaughter of these creatures for decades and generations for the benefit of others - fashion and cosmetic industries notwithstanding.

If you look up 'shark finning' on youtube, things like this have been going on for a while since the fin is considered a delicacy in certain places

You can buy shark at the fish markets in Japan, so I'm sure there are crafts that specifically catch them.

Speaking of sharks....I'm still haunted by the movie Jaws...when I'm swimming in the ocean I hear the music in my head... I wish I never saw that movie.

but I must admit SharkTale took a bit of the edge off...LOL

You can buy shark anywhere, you can order shark in nearly any coastal diner, and you can buy shark trinkets nearly anywhere. Shark was and has been considered a nuisance fish and not profitable for a fishing fleet to seek out, except perhaps sports fisherman.

Interesting. The first time I've seen it for sale is here though. Never really paid attention to it elsewhere I suppose. Just gotta watch out for them at the sunny beaches of Okinawa.

A perhaps common fish for sale in Japan may be Mako Shark and other shark meat for sushi. I have had shark to eat and it was okay. Sword fish was actually much tastier.

The Japanese continue to set and break record prices for Tuna. Again, any shark caught with their haul may have at one time been slaughtered and thrown overboard. If there is a market for shark then of course they will salvage what they can. If internal organs are of benefit then those will be saved.

Centuries have held the benefit of many animal parts for cures and home remedies, with perhaps China leading the way.

My wife's uncle was set up in a sting operation for transporting bear parts across state lines. There is hardly any part or organ of bear not used for medicinal purposes and fetch mighty high bucks on the black market.

Shark has been used as well for many objects. It is also a quite revered in many other cultures.

The fact that science has found a use for shark is assuring in the sense that those thousands that were slaughtered and dumped may have some market value. No, I am not at all endorsing the slaughter of species.

If there is anything to be concerned about in that regard is the total destruction of plant species that may hold the key to many diseases and the treatment thereof. These talks going on to pay Brazil to save the rainforest is total bullshit - Bribery and Ransom. Plus, it won't work. The price of Gold is too high, the indigent people too poor, and the criminal element too strong to give a rat's ass about trees and plants. All they care about is what is under them in the ground.

Avatar is a great example of what Humans do to get what they want. The true element in curing diseases is from plants and poisonous living creatures!

Australia has more venomous creatures in the world then anywhere else in the world. The cure is in Australia to a lot of diseases!

Killing animals, fish and mammals for medicine is cruel. I'm trying very hard to become a vegetarian, it's not easy. My diet is 70% vegetarian now, hopefully sooner or later I will be 100%.

People who hunt for sports are the worst Humans on the planet. It's well known in ancient and some modern cultures, if you harm or kill an animal - you will face hardship and negative karma!

Humans would be more peaceful on the planet if we all changed our diets to veggies!

The reality is, we will never have such a world in this dimension.

I can hardly accept a $300 million computer animation blockbuster film set in a quasi distant future in a far away galaxy as a "great example" of what humans do.

As for being a vegan, when your immune system is shot and you lack essential trace elements and protein for growth and protecting your body against disease, you'll change your diet.

I know people who tell me they don't eat anything with eyes. Others tell me they will not eat anything that comes out of the ground (as in salads). To each their own.

Don't eat fish if this story offends you.

Don't eat tuna. Remember the slaughter of dolphins and porpoises by the tuna collectors?

If you eat anything that comes from something that at one time had eyes or a product of an animal (including eggs and dairy products), then you are not a vegetarian. That right there is an example of animal exploitation for the sake of humans.

Or, is that called domestication of animals?

You can be a vegan. Just know what you are doing and do it right.

    Need protein? Beans and grains.
    Need trace elements? Leafy greens.

A true vegan will not eat any animal products or products that come from animals- period!

Maco sharks are commercially fished (and it's not bad, too).

When I ran a seafood department there was too much avaialble for it to be a "by chance" item.

The first time I saw it I mentioned that it is identical to what "white man" did to the native Americans.

We (humans) mainly do it for power. Back in the early days with natice Americans, land=power. In the movie, money=power (which is just as true today).

But it is alnd we already did it. Remember what the powers did to the natice Americans?

Countless leaders and governments have done the same thoughout history. While movies shouldn't be taken literaly most of the time there is a message and the movie Avatar gives out a great message. We need to listen to nature and our planet which is something we forgot to do centuries ago. Now it's "if science can't prove it" or "religion doesn't accept it" it doesn't happen.

According to science (animal behaviorists), animals don't have emotions because it can't be proven.

Its more a sportsfishing type thing.

There are not fleets of boats that go out like shrimpers, tuna, king crab, etc.

Is it Mako or Maco or either?

I don't think sport fishermen can support a vey large chain of supermarkets.

I'm sure either spelling is correct - the packing slips, tags, and labels I got said maco but I've seen mako, too.
