Tracing IP address to a city, is it possible?

I'm wondering if it is possible to trace an IP address to an actual city?

I keep getting only the country and the provider they are using, but is there a way to distinguish whereabouts they are actually located in the country?

It depends on how is IP range owner (ISP) is assigning the addresses.
With large ISPs like AOL you could not even tell if the IP address is European or US. That was years ago though.

If you do a reverse lookup of the IP address, you may very well get a host name revealing location data.

    The short answer: NO

... unless your ISP is an extremely small operation located only in your city.

I have realized i can get a general area...but it doesn't always work.

Anyway, i got what i needed from DCG's post. It gave me a city. I guess it depends on the provider.

If gives you the city OF THE PROVIDER.

For someone using AOL in Los Angeles, the "city" is Roanoke Virginia. Someone using PLANET in Roanoak VA will show as Houston, TX.

I can't see how that's useful to anyone for anything.

The reality is that you will have to subpoena the ISP...to get the actual location. I have done this before as related to investigation of a legal matter.

No JuniperPark, it gives you the ACTUAL location. I am not sure how it works in the united states.

I just tried it. I use Rogers and i tried my IP address and someone else using Rogers located elsewhere. I got TWO different locations. Both were correct.

So it works for me! At least in Canada it does.

No, it doesn't. I've been subscribing to both of the US and Canadian updates for about 10 years, so I know what I'm talking about.
