What are the best features of a .us?

I am just curious what are the best things to look for when coming up with a .us domain. I know alot of people are buying .us domains with the anticipation of having them profitable in the future. I have an idea for one, but I don't know if its worth trying to register because I don't know (industry wise, and word wise) whether it would be good. It is in the xxx industry, but deals with dvd's

    Any help would be appreciated

My advice is to buy names only in industries you are familiar with, unless you do some reasearch or just know it's mainstream.

If you don't know it's value when registering, it probably doesn't have any.

Well, you could register dvdporno.info now, sounds least slutty and more authoritative

I think it's the wrong way round - pornodvds would be better. Also the .us restricts you to us content, but that may be an advantage if that's the way you wanted to go.

The best feature of .us the us market.

but .us has many handicaps in its domestic market that are unique to .us because of historical reasons

    1) .gov and .mil. Official US federal sites use .gov and .mil, yet for virtually every other country in the world offical goverment sites end in the country TLD. It get even worse the US state goverment sites are moving away from .us to .gov. If .gov and .mil were replaced with .gov.us and .mil.us then .us will get a big boost. Will this happen I seriously doubt it.

    2) .edu. Again while US Universities use .edu Universities in other parts of the world for the most part do not. They tipically use the country TLD.

    3) Large famous us based multinational brands. For the most part they use .com for the US site and the corresponding country code elsewhere. In Canada they brand for the most part .ca, in the us .com.

My take is that .us will not reach the level of domestic market penetration of .ca or .co.uk in a long time. At this point .us seems dominated by speculators and trademark protection. The one redeeming factor for .us is the size of the domestic market. So a 5% pentration of the US market by .us would put .us on a par with .ca (if we assume the latter has a 50% penetration in Canada). To reach the level of .co.uk .us would need about 15% of the US market etc.

The best hope for .us is for americans to actually use their national TLD. But as things stand...

www.navy.us is a lame link and so is

    www.navy.mil.us

The official US navy site is at
    www.navy.mil

I think you underestimate the patriotism of the .US population.

In a little while I'll be demonstarting some of that with a group that is VERY .US supportive in a portal for

    Bikers.us

We'll see how that plays out.

I have noticed that alot of government sites I have come across tend to not be on the highly technical webdesign category. Like that navy link, it looks like something someone with NOT alot of graphic experience. Maybe its just my opinion, but some of the buttons, or graphic links, just seem a little cruddy for a site represent our military or country.

Here's 11 million pages of .US

    http://www.alltheweb.com/search?cat=...its=10&nooc=on

Here is a site I am working on filtering out a lot of the government sites http://archiver.us looks like business is warming up very nicely to .US

Here is the US government crerating a kid friendly space on the web :

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ngress_kids_dc

There are roughly 45 Million "kids" in the US ..

    http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0110384.html

Here is the US Government telling administrators that they MUST promote and teach children AND their parents about the kids.US within 30 days of the implementation of Kids.US ..
    taken directly fromthe Kids.US bill

    "SEC. 5. EDUCATION AND OVERSIGHT.

    (a) EDUCATION- The Secretary of Commerce, acting through the National
Telecommunications and Information Administration, shall carry out
a program to publicize the availability of the new domain and to
educate the parents of minors regarding the process for utilizing
the domain in combination and coordination with hardware and
software technologies that provide for filtering or blocking of
unsuitable content. The program under this subsection shall be
commenced not later than 30 days after the date that the new
domain first becomes operational and accessible by the public."

    So FineE but:

The idea that .US is "handicapped" dosent have a leg to stand on.
