World's largest solar power facility may be coming to my area

Triad Named Finalist For World's Largest Solar Farm

The world's largest solar farm could be coming to a Triad community.

National Solar Power announced Tuesday that a site in Guilford County is one of seven communities in the southeast United States that is being considered.

The company said the $1.5 billion 400-megawatt farm will provide enough energy to power about 32,000 homes.

"We are excited about the progress we have made in narrowing the search for establishing our groundbreaking solar farm project that will provide a source for renewable energy for consumers while boosting job creation and economic health in the winning community," NSP CEO James Scrivener said.

The company said it's looking for a site with undeveloped land, access to a qualified workforce, business support and government development and tax incentives.

The farm, once operational, would be hardly visible and surrounded by tall vegetation, the company said.

The other sites up for consideration are in Gadsden, Hardee, Osceola and Suwannee counties in Florida; and Sumter and Tatnall counties in Georgia.

This would be great for the area. FedEx is finishing up their new East Coast Hub in Greensboro, Honda Jet (yes, jets) are putting their North America Headquarters in Greensboro, the engines for the jets are going to be manufactured in Burlington, and Caterpillar is building a new manufacturing facility here in Winston-Salem between Winston and Greensboro.

There have been some losses (Dell plant closed) but there is still a strong work force. If it wasn't for the research, medical, universities, banking, education, technology boosting up the local economy things around here would be horrible.

That's great news for North Carolina Doc. I don't think you'll have to be concerned about the Florida sites being in the running....our Florida governor (Scott) is an anti-green republican oil man.

What I would like to see IF this comes to be (actually, irregardless of site) is the use of American Made Solar Panels and tech. But I doubt it.

We (the United States) had a huge jump on the manufacturing and technology behind solar panels and film during the past decade. Yet there was little emphasis on alternative fuels therefore little push to adoption or even funding.

The end result is China jumping from less than 10% of the market share to now dominating over 60% - and climbing.

As an example, look up the Rutgers installation of it multimillion dollar Solar project. Look who supplied all the panels and all the technology.

Yes, it is a shame and a disgrace for this country to allow this to happen and it's all because of the anti-green republicans who are in the pocket of the greedy rich oil industry. They do not want a green economy because their fortunes and businesses depend on continuing burning fossil fuels for energy.

It's also the fault of Obama for letting them have their way. He could at least make absolutely sure every American understands the truth about the potential harm in man-made climate change caused by fossil fuel burning. I believe this will cost him a lot of votes in 2012.
