    Cool Old school techs

My PBX thread made me think that I am an old school tech (even though being new to a lot of aspects of it all).

Here's a few points that only an "old school" techie would answer to (feel free to add):

You not only know what a dumb terminal is, you've used on.

    Same with an AS-400.

    Telnet rocks.

    MUD, MUSH, DIKU, etc..

When you hear "gopher" you don't think of fuzzy little creatures that dig up your lawn.

You know what PINE stand for and it makes sense to you.

    ELM isn't a tree.

When you hear "Norton" your first thought is "commander"

    DOS is not obsolete.

    Neither is hyper terminal.

You've posted your phone number on an open forum and didn't get prank calls.

    Two words: ASCII porn.

    Processors had numbers, not names.

You've used a computer that the speed was measured in KHz, the hard drive and RAM were measured in MB. You've also used an 8087 or 8086 system.

You know the difference between SVGA and XGA and know which one is false advertisement / a mistake.

    You've used MFM drives.

    And 5.25" 720K floppies

Most PCs today have more L1 cache than your first HDD.

You know the difference between SX and DX.

80486DX2-66 <- now wipe off your keyboard from all of the drool.

    You know machine language.

    Anyone else?

How could I forget BBSs! I still have Yankee trader on my PC. Wish I could find Kannons and Katapults.

(Does his best "old man" impression)

All you youngin whipper-snappers goin' all around whilly nilly all over the internet with yer fancy browsers, graphical interfaces, and high speeds.

When I was your age it took us seven minutes to download our email over a 300bPS modem and we were thankful! ANSI graphics were the new range and took a few minutes to connect to a BBS that used that over 1200 baud modems!!

Kids, they think they have it so rough made today. Well, at least 'the net' was safe back then.

Yeah, I was too frustrated trying to get draggar*com back then, the guy wanted $25K for it. Too bad I didn't think of anything else.
