Proxy Bidding has Arrived !!!

You can now place proxy bids for domains listed in the auction.

Go here http://www.dnforum.com/auctionlist.php to proxy bid.

Once a proxy bid has been placed on a domain name, the domain name can't be edited or deleted.

How does it work? If we proxy bid, and no one bids at the live auction do we get it for our proxy bid or for the starting bid price?

It will be like Ebay.

If your proxy bid is the only proxy bid and at the auction no one bids, you get it for the starting bid.

If someone has already proxy bid higher than the bid we want to make will it tell us that we were outbid? (before the live auction?)

No, it won't be like an auction before the auction.

Here are examples I gave the programmers. It should be the way it works unless technically there is a problem doing it this way.

A name has a $1 starting bid. Joe has a $5 proxy bid. John has a $12 proxy bid. No other proxy bids. Auction starts with a bid from John @ $8.00 (next increment from $5.00). At the auction Harry bids $10. The auction will then reflect John's $12 bid.

The thing I'm not sure about is if Harry bid $12 instead of $10 would his bid take the place of John's bid. I'm not sure how to handle that.

Another possibility:

A name has a $1 starting bid. Joe has a $12 proxy bid placed Monday. John has a $12 proxy bid placed Tuesday. No other proxy bids or all other proxy bids are less than $12. The auction starts with Joe's $12 bid.

Hi, how come everyone else has a "BID!" link next to their names except for mine? I'm being robbed of potential bids!

Just kidding. Nice system, Greg.

BTW, in the example, I think "Harry" loses out unless he outbids John. John's proxy makes his bid the first received. I think precidence is there.

I have confirmed that in this scenario:

A name has a $1 starting bid. Joe has a $5 proxy bid. John has a $12 proxy bid. No other proxy bids. Auction starts with a bid from John @ $8.00 (next increment from $5.00). At the auction Harry bids $12 without bidding $10 first. The auction will then reflect Harry's $12 bid.

The way the system looks at it is John's proxy bid can't carry him to the next increment.

If the bidding had went up minimum increments at a time, John's $12 proxy bid would have been reflected in the auction after someone made a $10 bid.

Everyone should use the auction bid increments for their proxy bids. I have one of the programmers working right now to prevent proxy bids that aren't an auction bid increment.

Example why:

A name has a $1 starting bid. Joe has a $4 proxy bid. John has a $11.99 proxy bid. No other proxy bids. Auction starts with a bid from John @ $5.00 (next increment from $4.00). At the auction Harry bids $10 without bidding $8 first. The auction will then reflect Harry's $10 bid and if no one else bids, Harry wins.

John's proxy bid wasn't enough to carry him to the next increment.

Most of the time an auction progresses minimum increments at a time and these situations would not occur.

I get it. Though bidding the same amount, Harry in essence BID FIRST. John's "proxy bid" was simply to auto-match Harry's, which would not carry him over the top. My logic error was in thinking that John's $12 proxy bid was "FIRST", when technically though set beforehand it was actually placed last (after Harry's).

I've not actively familiarized myself with the finer aspects of auctioning. Hopefully that helps someone else too.

Thanks,
~ Nexus

Another thing for everyone to keep in mind. You get one shot per name at a proxy bid. You can't go back later and change your bid.

So if your proxy bidding $2.00 for one of those 3 letter .coms, you're pissing in the wind.

gregr, thx for the opportunity on the 3 letter .coms.

Suggestion: When you finalize the auction roster, could you place the 20 "3 letter .com" names randomly throughout the other $1.00 names?

Thanks

I have someone looking at the increment checker. I deleted your posts so people don't know what your bidding. It should be fixed shortly.

After you find out, reread my first joking comment earlier! It's a NICE feature that you also see how much you bid on a given name. --First appearances makes you think others might be able to see it too, but turns out to be paranoia...

Just remember, if a Proxy is placed on your domain(s), you will NOT be able to remove or modify the domain(s) even with the Friday 3:00 p.m. CST "deadline". Just to clarify:

Thanks to those who posted in the attached thread for clarifying the issue for me, personally. Everything's
See you Sunday night, and have fun!
