Soccer nets too small!

I have been watching soccer since th world cup began with the hopes I would enjoy it but is very hard for to ge into it.

It annoys me immensely when the players are so close to the net and still shoot it 15-30 wide or over the nets. I think they need to make the nets the full size of the end of the stadium so that some of the more useless players could get goals. A new rule that if a guy misses the net by 15+ feet the first time its ok, the second time his coach should be allowed to kick him in the groin.

Some of the teams that should be great are really under performing.

I do however love the sportsmanship involved when someone gets hurt and the other team gives them the ball back.

Just a useless thought.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

I hate the fact that one day I was trying to get into it and no one scored anything.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

I think the best is this game I am watching now between Sweden and Paraguay, it's half time. Neither team has scored a goal in a game and a half, lol.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

Or maybe there should be magnets on the back of the goalpost and in the ball. Get it within 50 feet and the magnets pull it in for a goal.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

Well, hockey nets are even smaller. Basketball hoops are pretty small too. Oh and field goals in football, not too wide either. That's where skill comes in handy.

I think you have to be born and raised anywhere but North America in order to really appreciate soccer. Even if the US won the World Cup one day (which it won't), no one would really care. Ok, maybe 2% of the country.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

Adam, wait till the preliminary round is over. It'll get more exciting then.

Yesterday's game Germany-Poland was great, but I have not enjoyed watching the other games either. Even Brazil was quite disappointing.

It can only get better!

well, I was pretty impressed seeing how Trinidad&Tobago kept England away 83 minutes
but, as Dominik said, it will only get better

Re: Soccer nets too small!

I skip a lot of the first round games. It's the second round where things really get going. Especially if you can get some awesome political rivals like Argentina and England. Those games are simply gold.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

As someone who plays goal for my soccer team...I think they should make the nets smaller

I have never found soccer very exciting...especially not to watch. Of course, I will be watching all the games I can once we get into the quarter and semi finals.

Will you be setting up any more sports betting on the forum, Adam? I remember winning 6000 DNF after Greece won the Euro cup 2 years ago. I am also looking forward to see whether you'll be starting another NFL pool this year - how can a free competition with thousands of dollars in prizes be a bad thing?

I am always amused how immensely popular professional soccer is thruout the world *except* USA and Canada, where it's considered boring boring boring with all those low scoring 1-0 and 2-1 games. But in other nations the fans riot over the games!

Many of us do not even know what the World Cup is, let along watch it on TV. Most of us have never even seen a soccer game except involving your kids school sports, where it is very popular vs unpopular pro soccer.

Re: Soccer nets too small!

My point was that the size of the nets is not so important. I'm happy with tonights results though.

I awoke at 5am to watch Sweden and Paraguay

Sweden goaled in the last 4 minutes to win 1-0

Extremely enjoyable match to watch

Sweden used magic to bend the path of the ball. They were so patient and calm and then out of nowhere, some magical passes and the Paruguay defence looked lost.
Paraguay launched frenzied attacks on goal, using their amazing pace to repeatedly pepper the goals without success. Their energy was absolute.

Interesting to see how the Paraguay players often offered a hand up to a fallen Swedish player. And they did it with a grin.
I have read how Paruguay is a very peaceful and happy nation. Wonder why.

It is probably these glimpses of national charcteristics that make the world cup so interesting for me. The battles between countries so different and so far apart that are waged by professional sportsmen for their country's sake , forgoing their usuall enormous paypackets.
Soccer is not my favourite sport. Everyone knows the Aussie Rules is the best game, don't they?

However, if you concentrate on a world cup game, and make some attempt to understand the rules and the player's roles, it will reward you with immense enjoyment

Go Australia!!!!!!!! We are up against Brazil next, after scoring our first ever goals in any world cup, ever, against Japan 3 zip

Re: Soccer nets too small!

Well, Adam, considering that you are not born where soccer is daily bread like in Italy, it`s understable what you feel.....it`s the same for me when I see these people in Australia playing this strange Football with a crazy oval ball.....similar to the American Rugby.

Now, it`s coming the match that I always wanted to see:

ITALY vs USA

I would love to see a miracle of the USA because the Italian soccer disgustsed me so for once a year I`ll support USA
