I'm often surprised.

.
Spot on. It often takes time to sell domains at reseller prices. If you don't have cashflow from either a web-site, parking or something, you won't feel inclined to renew your domains and you'll drop ones that could be sold in future for a profit. You need cashflow. If a domain makes enough money from parking or something to cover its reg fees, it's a no brainer to keep renewing it until someone gives a good offer for it.
