You're wrong with regard to it's branding potential, and the burn down value of this domain proves that. You're also forgetting the larger marketing world outside of the US and Europe. Marketing demographics, and context could make a brand possible with it, even in the US [think safe context acronyms]. While it's certainly unlikely you'll find an "SS" leather boot brand using it, who's to say it couldn't be used for "Satoki Sushi Brand" in Tokyo?
I wouldn't buy the domain myself, but I live 2 hours away from Oświęcim, and hardly need a reminder of it's negative association. Context and location are relative here, and that's the strength of a great dual letter domain, it isn't bound to one market niche or geographic location.
