The situation in North Korea now is very similar to that of China in 1976 when Mao is dying. Different factions will compete for dominant power, with or without a Kim figurehead. They will also almost definitely uphold Kim's flag in the transition period of YEARS to come.
The real underlying problem of North Korea is the lack of a practical political alternative, again, just like what is now in China. The ruling single party has dominated the political landscape for soooo long that dissidents are too infant to stand on their own feet.
More importantly, any significant change (whether internally initiated or externally forced) there REQUIRES the blessing of her not so gentle giant, China. However, China obviously does NOT want to see any instability in the region.
