I think to an extent WhoDatDog is correct, some of this stuff isn't going to go too far. But on the other hand, again, if you are a company, why pay for greatsportsgear.com when you can get sportsgear.cc for the same price and market the better name.
It will come down to what the public is going to care about. The suffix or the name itself. If you are only going to care about .com's, then enjoy the chaffe. If you want to market a good name and brand the suffix, go for it.
I know what I would rather have.
