what is happening is legal, but could still be described as underhand. It is greed of the highest order, and surely there is something eurid could have done to prevent it.

This group of 400 registrars wants to completely dominate the landrush at the expense of all the other registrars and their customers.
If they operate at maximum efficiency, most other registrars will be annihilated.

a few half decent names will be available for the landrush, but so what. They are very uninteresting compared to the names that should have been available.
And now that trademark cheats have stripped away the best 5 to 10,000 domains, there will be big competition even for the mediocre stuff that is left.
