As a European I wanted to add some information on our perception of ccTLDs. In most cases people consider .com an American (and less so, international) TLD. So they would go to the country domain in most cases but when they are looking for 'americanized' content would go to .com.
From companies' perspective, most companies that do international business or want to be perceived as international/american would do a .com, otherwise ccTLD is the standard.
One example would be ID&T, which is a dutch event company. All their ads on Dutch TV are in English, same as their website, to give it more international appeal.
