The first one is because he is tired of listening to his wife nagging him to bring home more money and the second point is so he doesn't have to listen to her.

But, speaking from a strictly financial standpoint (leaving out all emotional and psychological benefits), two people pay one rent / mortgage and will for the rest of their lives. Insurance is cut by at least 25% since (from what I've seen) two people under one insurance is A LOT cheaper than two separate policies. There is even a difference in price (with my company) between "married" couples and "civil unions" / "cohabitating" couples.
Food is also cheaper because you are buying larger quantities. Two separate people might go though a half gallon of milk each a week 9say $3.00 a half gallon as opposed to $4.50 for a gallon). The same can go with bread, eggs, and other perishables.
Gas - people living together will tend to drive together places more often.
Loans - it is much easier to be accepted to sign on as a husband and wife as opposed to a couple living together.
Taxes - while the taxes are higher it is on the joint income, so sure you see an increase of ~75% of what you paid in the past, 175% of what you paid is still better than 200%.
