It's funny to see how Americans are traditionally wary of government (well they used to be...) while they will gladly confess their life details in exchange for a loyalty card

Government is not stupid, they outsource the collection of personal data to the private sector instead.
Actually you can't trust Big Brother but Big Business is not less dangerous.

Exactly, why do they keep so much data locally in the first place.
A data breach could always take place though (disgruntled employee) so you need to take steps to mitigate the problem before it ever happens, like having an emergency plan and of course encrypting data.
