So, for SEO, what it be worth my while to buy a bunch of domains with hyphens that are target to my market? For example, brooklyn-mortgage.com for when people search for mortgages in brooklyn

Would I receive lots of traffic?
no.. it helps ranking your project, but it doesnt generate type-ins (and therefore visitors) by itself.

domains bringing visitors without any work are already registered or very hard to find (you probably could snap one). in your situation its better to concentrate on one single domain.. of course, if you have the money, you can always buy good domains... (in here, at auctions, by contacting the owner, at sedo, etc..)

your domain should describe your service / the content.. and ideally it should be a search term (you can check that with overture) on the same time.

what is the service you are offering?
whats your target market?

Im gonna build a mortgage forum soon

if it should be a forum, why not using forum or talk or something similar in the name?

but i am not a native speaker, so it's better to get name-recommendations from them..
