Huge influx of traffic will consume RAM and CPU. The server work harder to serve your site to the public.
If it is a huge and busy site, go for a dedicated server instead. You get to utilize the entire server for your site. No worry been kick or limit by vps's small resources.
If you do not know how to manage linux server, do make sure get a 3rd party server management to look after the server for you. They will take care of security patches, tweaks and other related server issues while you can concentrate on your site without worry.
