Hi,

A few days ago one of my domains expired.
It is now held by a registrar.
It was originally registered through a web host
and they are still displayed as the domain owner.
A few times I tried to have my name in the whois.
Their customer service is a bit "confused" and
slow sometimes and my name
was never displayed at whois.
I knew that I´ve never had full control of this domain
like all my others...so I´m not surprised this happened.
When requesting a transfer I got the answer
to contact the "correct" support...days went on,
then it expierd.
All I wanted was to transfer the name.

Do I have any legal claims?

What is the domain name, who is the registrar, and why won't your webhost just pay for the domain's registration for another year?

They want me to pay the renewal fee beacuse it
expired. It´s a big registrar.
Other details are not necessary.

First of all, the important item as far as domain transfers go is the email address listed for the administrative contact for the domain name in the whois database.

If it is not your email address listed then you need to go to the web host (assuming it is their email listed as the administrative contact) and ask them to transfer the name to you.

Do you recall and, more importantly, do you have any documentation that shows you indeed purchased the domain name through the web host and what the terms and conditions were for the domain sale?

Is the web host still in business?

Isn't there supposed to be a grace period in place right now before domain names expire? Should contact the legal department of your registrar and explain the situation to an actual person.

Well if its owned by your Host and not you I see no legal claims. Why did you let the host reg it? Was it a free host?

Domain name expired but has not been droped.
I´ve hosted my site with them for a year.
Paid hosting.
The web host is still in business.

If the terms of the domain name sale were that the name would belong to you and you have documentation of that, contact the web host right away before the domain expires.

If the domain name is important to you, you may want to pay for renewing the name (it should be possible to do that even if you are not listed as the owner, but that's just an educated guess) which will take a lot of time pressure off you as you try to deal with the issue with the web host.

Terms:
To register your domain quickly and keep prices to a minimum
we bulk register domains. This means
that you will see Host.com details as the current domain name owner.
We will transfer ownership of the domain name to you when a request to do
this is submitted on our online Helpdesk. This enables some clients to
remain anonymous owners of their domain name.

If you wish to request that the ownership details are updated then please
submit a ticket to the DNS Changes category at our online helpdesk at

They say it´s my name but they owe it...I don´t get it.
Maybe I can´t claim anything here?

Many non-free hosts that are smaller will register domains using their own email address as a admin contact - giving them more control over domain.

I am guessing that this is the case with Glamorama. He/she didn't pay for the bill and they have cutoff support. Otherwise, there would be no reason for them to not sell another year of domain registration and profit again.

Does your host have a member forum? Maybe you can post there. You can also try searching for posts related to your problem at www.webhostingtalk.com , chances are there is someone there with the same host.

If he/she doesn't want to tell us the host here, why would they broadcast it to the people of www.webhostingtalk.com? I have the feeling there's something he/she's hiding from. If I am wrong, I do apologize.

Good place for any hosting questions, btw.

The terms stated clearly that you can have the domain ownership transferred to you if you ask them to do so.

Have you asked them to do so?

I would like to know the name of your Host, just so I know to avoid them :)

Agreed, that's what the terms state. That's what makes me think that there's something amiss here. Assuming they are half way reputable, they are going to want to keep a paying customer paying.

Can you tell us who the host is, since you don't want to say what the domain in question is?

They used to be banned at WHT. Seems support hasn't been stunning. Not sure why they were banned, but usually happens from spamming the boards, not sucking.
