Let's say you are planing to develop a website for commercial
purposes. Your business is selling used cars.

The name you want, "usedcars.com", for example, is not available
or unrealistically expensive. Which option would you consider the
best alternative:

Used-cars.com or usedcars.net?

Thanks for your advice.

The simple answer is that I believe it depends on the project.
usedcars.net would be great for an exchange or advice site. used-cars.com would be better for sales.

The more complex answer is that if both the hyphen and the .net are still available you may have the wrong phrase.

For type-ins as an indicater I see that hyphen dot coms and dot nets are close, but dot net wins by a small margin. But both of them together don't get 1/4 of the typeins the pure dot com gets.

Used-cars.com or usedcars.net?
Take the net and the hyphenated .com, if available

The name I wanted was rapartists.com and it was not available, so I took the .net and also registered rap-artists.com.

Note: I never would have taken the -.com, if I didn't have the pure .net.

Good luck

Hyphens are evil IMHO, especially if you are doing any form of advertising. People will forget the hyphen. If you are only ever going to do links on pages, then he name really does not matter.

.NET and .ORG are becoming more and more commonplace. I would never shy away from the .net.

I like hyphenated names for search engine positioning, but not for the site name.

Either way though, you will lose your traffic to the .com...people will forget to put the hyphen...or will forget to put.net, and will instinctively type the .com.

Think of a new name, and market it.

Did you see that doberry.com dropped the other day?

Sorry to put this in your thread MBZ.
