Checking spam score is an important indicator to value a website. It is a metric to measure the penalization risk of a website. While buying a website, buyers should consider this to be in a safe position for SEO.

Moz Spam Score estimates the possibility of a website being a low-quality spammy site. It represents the percentage of subdomain sites with similar features which are found to be penalized or banned by Google across the web. Spam scores are linked with sub-domains, not in the primary domain. It means if your website has high Spam Score it is applicable to its subdomains, the entire website isn't spammy. Spam backlinks can be a threat to a website and its search engine results.

When your website has a lot of backlinks please be sure that the links are not spammy. Less number of safe backlinks are better than lots of thoughtless or spammy backlinks. Too many spam backlinks can cause penalties by Google and losses in search rankings because spam score is a violation of the rules of Google (Search Engine).

Spam Score measures from 1 to 100 score
. The higher the score the possibility of being a spammy website is higher. A spam score of 1%-30% is considered Low, you don't have to be worried if your site is placed between this. A Spam Score of 31%-60% is considered Medium. A Spam score of 61%-100% is considered High. When the Spam Score is high Google doesn’t crawlers through the pages of a website, and thus the site doesn’t get ranked by Google.

Some reasons for being Spammed are, fewer pages on the site, invalid and inappropriate contents, the title of the page isn't being relevant, less acceptable TLDs for the site, numbers in the domain name, may have sequential letters in the domain name, using hyphens in the domain. There may have an absence of Google Tag Manager, not to use of Google Fonts API. The site doesn't have a location address, business email address, a valid phone number, No Facebook and LinkedIn links. A meta description may be too long or too short and using meta keywords can be a problem. It may have abnormally higher and lower outbound links, less number of visitors, etc.

But keep in mind that a high Spam Score of a site doesn't mean that this site is necessarily spammy but has potential. It shows that you need to do some more investigation into the quality of the site and improve it.

All the websites have at least a Spam Flag, having a few would be okay. But if the Spam Flag is continuously increasing then the host should be concern enough to reduce the Flags.

Yes, definitely check the backlinks from multiple sources. Majestic, ahrefs, and semrush as well. All backlink tools are not created equal. They have different data.

I have actually have been seeing an issue with Moz spam score for a few domains/sites that I follow. They are actually only updating the spam score once a quarter, which isn't very helpful. And, I can show you several sites where the Moz spam score is NOT correct. The site has a high spam score but it's completely wrong/false.
