Opinion: Discovery of Teixobactin is a more inspiring reason to remember Jan. 7
Most people will remember Jan. 7, 2015 as a terrible day: the day that fanatics murdered 12 people at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris. But that day brought good news, too. While it went largely unnoticed, that news was at least as important: scientists announced that that they had discovered a new antibiotic, Teixobactin. If that seems banal, it was anything but. Ever since the discovery of penicillin almost a century ago, modern medicine has been in an arms race; as bacteria develop resistance that renders existing treatments ineffective, we discover new ones.
