I've been watching this domain name for some time now. It says on the whois database that it has expired on Dec 2001, but I am still unable to reg it or see it on an expired list. Can someone tell me why this is????

I've seen names that took 3years to drop after expiring, and I've even seen names drop before they expire. You just never know whats going on. Heck, I've seen domains registered before the Internet was even invented!.

Shaggy --

This is the exception to the rule. Most names will be available for re-registration 30-60 days after the expiration date.

There are some domains that seem to be stuck in limbo. I suspect that there is nothing sinister about it, and they are simply stuck/forgotten.

hke.com dropped recently, but expired back in 1999, I think.

For some reason the daemon that trawls the registry misses them. You could try phoning the registrar and they might be able to force it to drop.

With tens of millions of records in the registry, it's not suprising that some are a bit odd.

There were some funny ones too, like spaced.com which for a while said it was created in 1969 :)

violinbow.com is another good one

it's only netsol and register.com - unless anyone knows of a third registrar that keeps domains?

I totally agree with you.

'Sound reason' tells me that once a name has passed the 30day after expiry date, it should 'realistically' be turned over into the general pool of available names.

Contact the ICANN website.. look for the "file a complaint" section and goodluck.
