I went to alexa and typed in jobsites.net to see what it would get. But it keeps bringing up the stats for another site called onrec.com. saying its rank is 18926 and has 125 links from other websites.

Why is this? What is alexa actually doing then?

thanks guys

As far as I know Alexa will group domains posted to the same web site and lump them all.

I am not sure of the ins and outs.

You would be wise to disregard such results and look for corroborating evidence.

Make sure to use the Overture.com search suggestion tool.

This can be found at overture.com > click advertisers > tools > search term suggestion tool

It basically acts as a simulator for the web browser address bar and is probably the most potent tool out there on the Net (I don't say that lightly).

Basically domains could be categorised into 2 types from the Overture tool:-

- type ins for existing web sites
- type ins where the surfer is "guessing" a web site.

This latter one spells BINGO!

There are a number of ways of using the tool:-

Let's take the phrase "domain name".

You can try:-

"domain name"
"domainname.com" (most returns)
"domain name.com" (with a space)

Thus keying in say games.com gives a lot of good suggestions.

Remember the duck rule - "if it walks like a duck..."

========

Remember that just because green is grass, this does not mean that grass is green.

Just because a domain is not in Overture, this does not mean it will not get type-ins.

Another area I am experimenting in is "adjective-noun" combos.

There is a tendecy to go for names only with big overtures but names like coolmobile.com get a fair few hits.

Right now anything over 200 for "domain name" for an adjective-noun combo I would go for as long as it passes the "duck" test.

Hope this helps!!

it means jobsites.net has or had been redirected to onrec.com.

Alexa compiles data from the last 6 months of a website's existance on the internet.

It is common that site owners redirect some domains to other sites they own or are affiliated with. Alexa will then give stats for the redirect, because in effect the redirect is the unique domain name hosted (while the orignal name may not have a "home").

For this to happen, the original site does not have to necessarily be redirected to this other (onrec.com) site currently. It could be from when Alexa last checked the domain name.

I hope this helps. :)

I know what you mean. If someone around here owns DomainDuck.com, DomainGoose.com and DomainOstrich.com, I am not surprised that what looks like a normal domain name is really a duck form diagon alley.

Do a whois if you dont believe me.
LOL :)
