The biggest round of the day was reported by Danger, developer of a mobile device that combines e-mail and instant messaging with a phone and other features that has closed its oversubscribed Series D round of financing at $35 million. Softbank Capital Partners led the round, which also included Meritech Capital Partners and a number of other new investors.

In early-stage funding, Rackable Systems, a provider of rack mount high-density server and storage systems, is expected to announce today that it has racked up a $21-million first round courtesy of Parthenon Capital and the appointment of Lightspeed venture partner Tom Barton as president and CEO. He replaces co-founder and chief technology officer Giovanni Coglitore.

In another Series A play, NanoGram Devices, developer of nanomaterials for medical components, has raised $9.2 million in a Series A financing co-led by Venrock Associates and Nth Power Technologies, VentureWire has learned. The company also announced its first CEO, Ken Westrick, who was CEO of publicly traded photonics and microwave company New Focus.

Breaking the $100 million mark, seven companies reported raising $110 million, with Wily Technology, a provider of performance management software for Java-based enterprise applications, expected to announce the close of its $15-million third round led by Focus Ventures with participation from Accel Partners and Greylock. - By John Fuller

Eight companies reported raising $38 million, with a nice chunk of that going to Icera Semiconductor, a fabless semiconductor designer that raised a $10-million Series A co-led by Benchmark Capital and Atlas Venture, with each chipping in $5 million. The tight lipped company is developing a new class of processors designed to provide high performance with lower power consumption for use in end-user consumer and business-user products.

Meanwhile, Savantis Systems, a provider of database server consolidation appliances, said it raised $12 million in its Series B led by Sigma Partners with participation from Highland Capital Partners and Star Ventures. The company said it will use the funding for sales and marketing and business development as it plans to launch its product next month.

Finally on the personnel front, Espial, a developer of software for smart devices such as set-top boxes, screen phones, gaming consoles, and handheld devices, said former Spyglass president and chief operating officer Martin Leamy has joined the firm as CEO and director. Jaison Dolvane, who previously held the CEO post, remains president and a director. Mr. Leamy was president and chief operating officer of interactive television software maker OpenTV, and before that was president and chief operating officer of Spyglass, the startup that developed Moasic, the commercial Web browser software that Microsoft later used to develop its Internet Explorer. - By John Fuller

Although the company was founded in November 2001, Black Storm Networks, a developer of wireless switches using 802.11 standards, has just come out of stealth to announce that it has changed its name to Airespace and raised $15.5 million through two funding rounds, a Series A and B, it raised last year. The company is backed by Hotung Capital, KTB Ventures, Battery Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, and Storm Ventures, which incubated the company.

In other early-stage funding, Avaki, a provider of commercial grid software, said it raised an additional $4.2 million in a third tranche of its Series A co-led by Polaris Venture Partners and General Catalyst with participation from Sofinnova Partners. The company will use the funds for market expansion, targeting industries such as life sciences, manufacturing, oil and gas, and financial services.

Overall, 11 companies reported raising $142 million, with Tropic Networks, which develops an optical packet networking system, raising $20 million in its Series C from investors including round leader Celtic House Venture Partners; Goldman Sachs Private Equity Group; Kodiak Venture Partners; Crescendo Ventures; and the Teachers' Merchant Bank, the private equity arm of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.

In M&A news, Protein Design Labs, a publicly traded developer of therapeutics for cancer and certain immunologic disorders, will acquire Eos Biotechnology, a developer of genomics-based therapeutics and diagnostics tools, in a stock swap $37.5 million. Eos Biotechnology pulled the plug on plans to merge with publicly held pharmaceutical company Pharmacopeia a year ago in a deal that had been initially valued at approximately $197 million. Capping its Series A, Plaxo, provider of software for managing e-mail contact lists on computers, PDAs, and mobile phones, is expected to announce next week it has raised another $1.8 million to close out the round at $3.8 million. Sequoia Capital led the final tranche, providing $1.5 million, while individual investors chipped in $300,000. The proceeds from the round will be used to develop and deliver the company's product, Plaxo Contacts, which works with PDAs and other devices that synchronize with Microsoft Outlook.

On a quiet day for fundraising, five companies reported raising $36 million overall with the largest round, $21 million, going to Deploy Solutions, a provider of recruiting, hiring, and retention software and services that is being tight lipped about the details of the round. In other funding news, Healthcare Management Directions, a healthcare startup that plans to operate short-stay, diagnostic and acute care hospital facilities, said that it has raised $8.1 million in its Series B led by CB Health Ventures, the venture capital arm of New York-based healthcare investment firm Cain Brothers. SSM Ventures, Select Capital Ventures, Evergreen Investments, and individuals also opened their wallets.

Finally, looking ahead, Bluesoft, a developer of distance measurement and position location technologies for the Bluetooth industry, is expected to launch its first two commercial products next week and is also planning its Series C. The company will launch a Bluetooth location device, which will reach volume production in May, and a WLAN location system that is now available in evaluation kit form and begins shipping in the second quarter. Ikanos, developer of broadband silicon chipsets, is expected to announce it has closed $30 million in a Series D led by Sequoia Capital with all major prior investors, including Intel Capital, JPMorgan Partners, Panasonic, and Walden International, also chipping in. Meanwhile IceFyre Semiconductor, which provides physical layer devices for 802.11a/g networks, is expected to announce landing a cool $19-million Series C co-led by Motorola and Covington Capital.

In other funding news, Vonage, provider of high-speed Internet-based digital telephone services is looking at raising a $25-million Series B round later this year, CFO John S. Rego told VentureWire.
