Ebay/Verisign auction deal

Looks as though verisign are pretty much giving up on greatdomains then??

Not at all Snoopy. In fact, this is in line with an agreement made a few days ago in which eBay will act as a massive broker for large companies surplus merchandise. eBay is moving toward boutique-ing large companies, of which Verisign is one.

The authentication part of this is baffling though. Not quite sure what the hell all that means...

eBay has migrated to a business to consumer model since last summer. The biggest vendor on eBay my dollar volume is evidently IBM over the past 3 quarters, and eBay has long courted big corporate vendors in preference to the mom and pops.

Authentication services, most likely involved through eBay Payments, and the verification of eBay members identities through the ID verified program.

We've all wondered why eBay, given its huge member base, didn't try a domain boutique earlier. I would venture, however, that listing fees being prohibitive for those wanting delusional prices, would still ensure that the volume of listings wouldn't be very high ....
