I've been trying to establish the daily WHOIS check limits for a number of registries and whether there are permanent or temporary bans in place.

So far, I've estimated that:
Tucows/Opensrs accepts 1 check/second -- and ban for a period of 24 hrs
NSI - Limit of 1000/day....24-48 hour ban
Register.com - 200 per day - 1 day ban
Godaddy - issues complicate externally checking WHOIS info

That's about all I have gathered right now. What I am interested in are ways to either circumvent these limits, if at all possible. I've been in touch with some of the above registrars and it seems they have pretty airtight policies.

Is there any way around whois daily search limits.

Bennoart, I'm looking your way :)

I had once queried about 5000 dictionary words against .co.uk.

Guess what? They complained to my ISP!!

The zone files are great, but they don't specifically target the *necessary* fields I would like to look at.

Really, what fields are missing?

Well, almost all of them :)

It's great to have the domain name alongside the IP and nameservers, however, zone files don't contain any of the key information such as creation date, expiry date, contact emails etc.

Hmm, good info, thanks for the post. I didn't realize Register.com had such a small limit.

I have 'watch your domains' watching domains and it gives you an opportunity to delay the interval in searches or search more often. Guess it's better to search less and not get banned. :)

My experience with godaddy whois -
First 100 whois quieries are fine. All next quieries would result incomplete output - registrant name and nameservers only.
This looks like permanent ban... or at least for a few weeks.
